Uploading a website you already created

The most important part of your account is the disk space. We have given you a certain amount of space on our servers for you to use. You use disk space to store web pages, images and more.

To put your website online, you must upload your web pages to that space, and they then become viewable on the web.

To do that, you have what is called 'FTP' access.

This allows you to use an FTP program to upload your website's files to the web space. Don't worry- FTP is not complicated- you can put files online by simply dragging and dropping them to the server.

Logging in via FTP
The first thing you'll probably want to do with your new hosting plan is connect to the server and upload your website.

You need an FTP program to do this. We suggest File Zilla.

Your FTP details are in the welcome email that came with the account.

The details you need are:

Host: ftp.mdgreenhost.com.au (or ftp.yoursite.com)
Username: (user@yoursite.com)
Password: (see the email)

Put these into FileZilla in the bar along the top and click 'Quickconnect' (leave the 'Port' box blank)

Once you've logged in via FTP, you'll see a listing of files and folders appear on the right side of FileZilla. This is your home directory; it's an area of the Web server where you can upload, download and delete files and folders.

You can ignore all the folders you see except for the public_html folder. Open it, this is your site. If you place a page in this folder (eg. mypage.html) then you can access it from yoursite.com/mypage.html.

Let's assume that you want to upload a new home page for your website. We suggest that you delete everything in the public_html folder and start fresh.

Make sure your home page is called index.html. If it isn't, rename it using your file manager (for example, Windows Explorer on Windows, or the Finder on Mac OS).

Upload the home page. Find your index.html home page file on your hard disk using FileZilla, then upload it to the document root folder on your Web server.

You can usually do this by dragging the file in FileZilla, or by selecting the file and clicking an Upload button. If there was already a default index page called index.html in the document root folder, you'll probably need to confirm that you want to overwrite it.

You can now test the page.

Open up your Web browser and go to the URL of your website. You should see your newly-uploaded home page appear. If you still see a default holding page, make sure there are no other Web pages in your document root that might be overriding your index.html page (for example, index.htm, index.php or Default.htm). If you do find other files with these names, rename or delete them using your FTP program.
